Native Plant Communities and Impacts of Invasive Species

Learn plant identification activities and inventory and mapping strategies that will encourage students to become acquainted with their surrounding natural spaces while fostering an interest in native plants. Gain a strong understanding of the importance of biodiversity and the roles plants play in surrounding ecosystems helps students understand the ecological impacts invasive plants have on these systems. By observing plants in their natural setting, a connection is developed with our natural surroundings and enhances plant identification skills. This further translates into understanding how plants are labeled native, non-native and invasive. This session will demonstrate how to incorporate plant ecology, habitats and invasive species into existing instructions or stand-alone lessons. This session is best suited for Elementary and Middle School.
